The Cathie Marsh Centre for Census & Survey Research of the University of Manchester organizes a short course on Fuzzy Sets Analysis the 7th of June 2011. For more details and registration, click HERE.

Course Content

This course aims to: Introduce concepts of fuzzy and crisp sets; Study causality using truth tables; Calibrate ranked data; Reduce truth tables using Boolean algebra; Study causality using fuzzy set data. It consists in: lecture on fuzzy sets in comparative research; Practical on creating and calibrating fuzzy sets (uses SPSS and FS-QCA software); Lecture on Boolean algebra and reducing truth tables; Practical on qualitative comparative analysis, using FS-QCA and Tosmana software; Practical on analysing fuzzy set data using nested sorts (uses STATA software, Excel and STAT-Transfer)

Fee

£175 (£125 for those from educational institutions). CCSR offers 5 free places to research staff and students within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Manchester.

Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences

LINKING THEORY AND EMPIRICAL RESEARCH

Instructors (non-exhaustive): Craig Calhoun (New-York University), John Gerring (Boston University), Gary Goertz (University of Arizona), Mich¸le Lamont (Harvard University), Dietrich Rueschemeyer (Brown University), and Jonathan H. Turner (University of California, Riverside)

Goals

The Berlin Summer School in Social Sciences Š Linking Theory and Empirical Research aims at promoting young researchers by strengthening their methodological understanding in linking theory and empirical research. In a first step, we tackle the key methodological challenges of causation, micro-macro-linkage, and concept-building that occur in all research efforts. In a second step, we look at how certain empirical fields deal with these challenges and Š by referring to selected empirical studies Š what solutions have been found to overcome them. Furthermore, participants are provided with hands-on research advice and have the opportunity to present their own work and approaches to these issues.

Organizers

The Berlin Summer School is a joint endeavor of two of GermanyÕs leading social science institutions, the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) at Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin and the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB).

Registration

The international summer school is open to thirty PhD candidates. Due to generous funding by the BGSS and the WZB, there will be no tuition fee. We have applied for additional funding and thus might be able to cover travel and accommodation costs for all participants. A decision is expected soon. Five ECTS Credit Points can be granted upon successful completion. The call for applications has begun. Applications can be submitted online until May 15, 2011.

For more details, visit the Berlin Summer School's Website, or contact directly Johannes Gerschewski.

ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques

QCA AND FUZZY SET

Instructors: Cartsen Schneider (CEU Budapest) Claudius Wagemann (Italian Institute of Human Sciences, Florence)

The ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques organizes a two-weeks class (5 ECTS) on QCA and Fuzzy Set.

Course Content

This course deals with set-theoretic methods and their application in the social sciences. In a first step, the course spells out the fundamental concepts that characterize this methodological perspective, among them the central notions of necessity and sufficiency. This requires that the participants are also made familiar with background knowledge from set-theory, formal logic and Boolean algebra. The course will start with crisp-set (dichotomous) Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA), including practical steps, best practices, and the use of software packages (fsQCA, TOSMANA, depending on the advancement of the course perhaps also Stata and R). Then the course provides a thorough introduction to fuzzy-set QCA (fsQCA) and the discussion of several advanced issues surrounding QCA, such as its relation to case selection principles, concept formation and aggregation issues, or the treatment of time in QCA. Real-life published applications are used throughout the course; but participants are also encouraged to bring their own data, if available. Some basic empirical comparative training is useful to get more out of the course, but this is no course prerequisite in a strict sense.

Fee

590 euros (including an accommodation) for those from an ECPR member institution, and 840 euros for the others.
