A word of welcome

Welcome to the specific pages of the COMPASSS launching conference. This event has a clear international and interdisciplinary ambition, with distinguished guests from Europe, the USA (with Prof. Charles C. Ragin) and Japan.

It is open to methodologists, disciplinary specialists and advanced students in various scientific disciplines.

Conference theme
[French below; Français ci-dessous]

The key theme of the conference is that of the "middle road" between the qualitative and quantitative approaches, methods and techniques. Can these different traditions meet in some new, original tools, such as Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) or Fuzzy Sets ? This conference intends to open up a place of dialogue and fruitful confrontation between qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as a locus for the integration of these methods and the further development and application of original approaches, methods and techniques. A particular emphasis will also be laid on some practical applications of these new tools in policy-oriented research.

The purpose of this launching conference is to bring together scholars and practitioners who share a common interest in theoretical, methodological and practical advancements in a systematic comparative case approach to research which stresses the use of a configurational logic, the existence of multiple causality and the importance of a careful construction of research populations.

It also aims at setting the agenda for the further development of systematic comparative case analysis as a genuine and established research strategy to study many different and diverse social phenomena. --
